Foreign players
I am new here so forgive me if this (as I suspect) has been covered before now.
Having been a football fan for about 50 years, I am appalled at the current fashion of signing foreign players. This is nothing to do with nationalism etc, it is merely that when I watch an ENGLISH side, I want to see the majority of those on view to be ENGLISH. There is no way in hell that we will ever be world beaters whilst this current trend prevails. |

Re: Foreign players
Hi Bizman, welcome to the English Football Forums.
I have mixed views on this, like you I would expect to have more English players in the Premier League and even more, local home grown talent, as a fan I always want at least one local player in the team. At the same time it's great to watch some of the world's best players every week. Having so many top international players and managers is having an impact on our young players development and the way football is played in all of our leagues. Maybe in the future we won't need so many. |

Re: Foreign players
Sorry Pal, but I disagree to the extent that the one time we won the world cup, foreign players were a great rarity in our game. We have fallen into the trap of believing that a foreigner with a type of rep is naturally going to be a superior player.
Look at Liverpool! In the days that they had nearly all UK players and only one or two exceptions, they were world beaters.

Re: Foreign players
One problem has been the price tag, because clubs want to keep there best English players they stick a high price on there heads making it cheaper to buy the same or better quality from other leagues.
England was a great team in the 60's, Euro 96 was close and who knows how well we would have done recently with a better manager. I agree the amount of foreign players has got a bit extreme and maybe it is time to have restrictions. |
